In the early 1990s football was revolutionised with the introduction of the flat back four. Bayern Munich coach Søren Lerby’s first game in charge after Jupp Heynckes was dismissed in October 1991 was against Borussia Dortmund – and he played a flat back four. BVB ran rings around Bayern that day, outplaying their hosts in every department and eventually coming away with the club’s biggest ever win in Munich’s Olympiastadion.
