To commemorate International Women’s Day, the Club interviewed Edurne Salsamendi, a pioneer of gender equality at Athletic. Edurne went to Athletic Club’s headquarters in 1972 with the intention of becoming a Member. But they told her it wasn’t possible because women did not have the same rights as men. Salsamendi then began a long fight for equality at the Club. Thanks to her work, in 1979, upon Beti Duñabeitia becoming president of the Club, new statutes were approved that finally allowed women to become full Members.
